The Froebel Approach

Bishop's Forest Pre School's approach is child led and inspired by the principles of Friedrich Froebel, recognising play as the highest form of learning. Whether building dens, observing wildlife, creating natural art or sharing stories around the campfire, children develop confidence, resilience and a deep connection to the natural world.

Whatever the weather, the woodland becomes the classroom, supporting physical development, emotional well being and a life long love of nature and learning. By following each child's interests and ideas, we nurture independent thinkers who feel valued, capable and curious.

The Six Forest School Principles

These principles guide the practice of Forest Schools and support the development of children in a natural setting.

Long-term Process: Forest School is a long-term process of regular sessions in a natural environment, rather than one-off visits.
Natural Environment: It takes place in a woodland or natural environment to foster a life long relationship between the learner and nature.
Holistic Development: The aim is to promote the holistic development of all involved, fostering resilient, confident, independent, and creative learners.
Child led learning: Children are encouraged to take charge of their own learning through play and exploration.
Risk Management: Forest School encourages taking managed risks to help children learn about their environment and develop practical skills.
Reflection: Reflection is an integral part of the learning process, allowing children to understand their experiences.
